Of many microscope items that I have bought over the years oneBay,
maybe 1 in 30 transactions has not been satisfactory. Those arenot bad
odds. Some of the problems were actually my fault in that I didnot
read the descriptions carefully enough about condition andaccessories.
Or worse, I got greedy about getting something for a price muchlower
than expected, and lost my common-sense caution that shouldsound a
warning in my head. Another problem is how heavy items arepacked for
shipment. Some sellers have no idea how to pack a microscopeproperly,
and about the rough handling the shipping company is likely toinflict
on it. I doubt that many sellers do it deliberately, because itis a
real hassle to get a damage claim paid by the shipper. Theother
problem is as you note, some sellers are very, very slow to getaround
to actually sending it. You should always complain to eBaybefore you
leave negative feedback. Greg
First, getting the seller to perform simple optical tests and
document the results in an
email can warantee his assertions as part of the description of
the item. A buyer should then call the intended shipping company
and ask to speak to their "packaging analyst",
inquiring what exactly are the requisite protections to be taken
with the item in question,
then communicate these specifications to the seller, perhaps
throwing in a paltry extra five as an inducement for cooperation
and to cover any special dunnage required. At this point, the
buyer and the shipping company will find it difficult to wriggle
away if the item lands broken. When the unit arrives, have a
digital camera and persuade the deliveryman to tarry a moment
while you photograph the package, open it and next photograph the
contents. This adds a layer of protection in dealing with the
shipping company and seller in many circumstances.
Only use your credit card for Ebay purchases. In event of receipt
of an item whose performance departs from prior seller
attestations or which arrives broken, call your credit card
carrier to void the purchase while offering the documentation in
hand to prove the item was not delivered in the condition
originally described. Complaints to Ebay and Paypal should be
handled later and separately for other reasons. Another advisable
procedure is to never threaten negative feedback; leave that
unsaid and in the air like a Damocletian sword. If negative
feedback becomes the remaining alternative in the situation, use
it but don't prematurely reduce positive options by its
disconcerting menace.
