Re: Worst times ever for eBay microscopes

Sorry I don't have the issue it was from but I do know it was Forbes.

Forbes ran a test of sending emails from businesses and compared how
many actually made it to their destination and how many did not....you
might check back issues for that type of story. Their conclusion was DO
NOT rely on email as your sole business communications since it was
unreliable.

I too was very surprised as to the number of failures...to the point
that whenever I conduct business over the Web I do not consider it
finished until I get an acknowledgment back indicating that the
receiptent actually got my transmission. Also one of the first emails I
send is to request a phone number and address of my customer in case we
lose contact.

Considering the problems I have been having with Google, Yahoo, Ebay
and others it would not surprise me a bit that many data transmissions
end up in the bit bucket.

Within the last month, one of the local ISP was shut down by problems
that they had with their carrier...and all incoming email was lost.
They finally "solved" their problem by switching carriers and a lawsuit
is currently in the works.

I remember reading a study that Forbes did a few years ago that showed that 20-30%
of their test emails never reached the specified destinations.

Do you have a citation for this (issue date, URL)? I find this number
much too high to believe. In my experience as an email administrator,
the number is more than an order of magnitude smaller than the number
you cite.

The only way I could believe that number is if the list of addresses
they used for their test included a lot of stale or otherwise bogus
addresses.
