Re: Idenification Of Leitz Microscopes..SM,Dialux,Laborlux,"Baby" Ortholuxs

Hello Tools, there was a similar question not long ago in the
RealMicroscopy Yahoo Group. I posted a few scans of Leitz scopes from
my 1971 pol scope catalog, see
http://tech.ph.groups.yahoo.com/group/RealMicroscopy/photos/browse/32e9

The early Leitz Dialux (baby Ortholux) from the 1950s had a T-shape
base like the bigger Ortholux, and it had a head that connected on top
of the arm, not in front of it like on the Ortholux. Paul James has a
nice article about it in Micscape magazine (Jan 2006). By my 1971
catalog the Dialux had a triangular base and looked very much like the
Labolux.(the Leitz Laborlux, spelled with the middle R, was the later
pale gray "modern" stand). As far as I can tell all SM stands have a
separate lamp that sits on the foot beneath the condenser. There seems
to be some variations in the focus knobs but I think the SMs all have a
single-knob for coarse and fine focus. Hope that helps -- this is
actually all quite interesting despite the confusion. Greg

After Googling and reviewing other archives, I find that I still cannot
determine
whether a older Leitz BLACK scope is a SM, Dialux, Laborlux or "Baby"
Ortholux. From discussions in the past, it would seem that this is a
common problem.

Could someone with Leitz documentation do some side by side comparsions
and briefly describe how one tells one model from another. Links to
pictures of each of the models would be appreciated too...in
discussions past, any links to representative scopes are long dead.

Is there any Leitz documentation on line for the older scopes? I have
looked on one excellent site but find only Ortholux from the BLACK
golden age of Leitz represented.

Thanks

TMT
