Why not use a (much) lower power LED? I've found that ordinary
brightness "white" LEDs properly sited with regard to a condenser
system give adequately bright light.
Unfortunately my eyes need a surplus of luminosity: too many years
passed few inches far from an old type monitor, to such an extent that
actually I can't read cartaceous, but only on-the-screen documents.
The difficulty I've found is getting the LED exactly where the
filament of the lamp used to sit. (B&L StereoZoom, Vickers M12
metallurgical, etc.)
Well, I already had this difficulty on the brain, and was conceiving
various machineries to properly place the led :)
