gentlemen,
i bought a 5 watt led (700 mA) and i wonder if i can use it as light
source

i have an old but still good vickers with Köhler illumination

my question is: can this led, classified as 'class 2 laser', create
damage to my eyes?
Not in the way a laser will, but 7W is a helluva LED. It will be too
bright to look at comfortably, and the intensity could certainly damage
the retina. I'm not sure whether the spectrum goes into the IR, but if
it does, watch out. The LED will run very hot, and will fry itself
without a heat sink. There are many helpful articles in the Micscape
online archive at http://www.microscopy-uk.org.uk/index.html

I will follow your suggestion and spare my retina. I already played with
an UV light source, when I was young, until I felt my eyes fry.
Incidentally, I have doted my led with an heat sink (it already has a
dissipating surface on the rear of its body), also to contrast the decay
of luminance's properties with the increasing of the temperature.
