Are you sure you want new? What do you consider "antique"?

Your budget would get you a top of the range research instrument of
late 70's to early 80's vintage (maybe later) and I'd have thought it
would support everything you could ever want.

My main scope is a Zeiss Universal of late '60s vintage. It's
reasonably nice and robust, but it's getting harder and harder to find
parts and people to help me maintain it. I've had objectives that have
started to delaminate and other issues that can be fixed by replacing
parts, but that's just another can of worms. As I said, I'd rather not
spend my time scouring eBay looking for parts and then hoping they're
what the buyer claimed (often they are not), or worse.

I'd rather just go to a dealer and say "this is what I want, what will
it cost" than spend months bodging up something from dodgy pieces
bought on eBay. Some people seem to enjoy the parts chase more than
they do using the completed instrument, but that's not me.

In an attempt to get away from eBay, I've talked to a few dealers to
try to get a feel for the used market for complete scopes, but the
prices they want for a 20-25 year old scope are just ridiculous.

I realize by going this route that things such as DIC might forever be
out of my price range, but so be it.
