Good evening.
I was hoping that someone here with their obviously greater knowledge
than mine, would be able to throw some light on an old microscope I
acquired recently.
I've never quite seen a microscope like this. It was described as a
'Travelling' microscope.
It is unusual in that..although it is brass (other than the cast stand
feet) it is painted black. I was guessing this might be something to do
with reducing reflection?
The next and most important, is the microscope seems to lack an upper
eye piece. At the moment, one looks into a tube where a lens is clipped
in. Having said that, it does not appear that there is place for any
further upwrd extension to the microscope..so perhaps it 1s complete.
When looking down the tube through one of the three lenses supplied,
images are smaller..no larger! Odd for a microscope!!
Their would usually be a mirror to enhance the lighting. This one is
fitted with a well made square containing a clear glass solid peice
which has a small circular hole in the side!
You may know understand my confusion. There is no makers mark, but the
'scope seems well made.
Has anyone here come across a similar microscope, or can enlighten me
as to it's use..and if it is complete? I fancied that perhaps it was a
'prototype' and never finished?
I have left five pictures at

I hope someone can take the time to look, and give me their opinion. I
hope the damned link works too!
If someone can help...Thank you. I would add it is probably a UK
instrument. I am from England and it came into my possession there.

Here's hoping!

Hi Ricky
Not a historian myself but the sturdy stand and some of its features
seem similar in your photos to microscopes sold for projection. eg see
David Bull's article on Micscape
