Don:
I am not too happy about this thread because it's moving into the completely
wrong direction. Here is why.
Without specifying which of your interests make working with an LM most
enjoyable for you and without telling us about your experience and
equipment, your post will not enable us to help you. All the information you
have collected so far is of rather marginal value and will not help you in
deciding whether or not a budget of $7000 should be invested into a brand
new scope. You also did not mention the condition of your old Zeiss and
Leitz scopes. Please tell us more about them. There are many resourceful
people visiting this group who know how to repair a defective scope.
It is incorrect to associate eBay with any good Leitz and Zeiss scope. eBay
is a dump, which may or may not give access to the right parts. This has
absolutely nothing to do whether one should buy new or used.
I am using a new Nikon E400, an old Leitz Ortholux and a old B&L. All three
are working very well for me and I will not trade any of the older ones for
new equipment.
Cheers,
Gregor

After scrounging eBay and other sources over the last ten years to keep
my old Zeiss and Leitz microscopes going, I'm started to get tired of
it. I'd rather spend my time collecting and observing rather than
fiddling with antiques.
I've also come into somewhat of a windfall recently, so after much
thought, I've decided to splurge and treat myself to a brand new
microscope (look for my auctions on eBay soon as I sell off my
antiques).
Here's the problem: it's been a long time since I've looked at the new
microscope market and have no idea what's available and what's worth
considering. I'm assuming that all of the big four (Zeiss, Leitz,
Nikon, and Olympus) are still viable and worth looking at, but beyond
that, I'm clueless.
Whatever I buy will probably be the last microscope I buy, so I want
something that's upgradeable. I'm only an amateur, so I don't need some
of the more esoteric features, such as epi flour, etc.
My budget is $7,000.
