In this case, as I think with most brands, there are no dealers

Gary:
The centralization of the vending process to eliminate
dealerships in favor of regional
offices is interesting. Nonetheless, makers compete against
makers and regional
offices against regional offices. And that is the room for the
lever, whatever room that is.
I am in exact agreement with you if you say the regional outlets
hold a uniform and unbending line on price and care not whether a
rival takes away a unit sale thinking it has piffling effect on
branch assessment in contributing to cumulative target brand
quotas set by their corporate heads and that those same corporate
heads don't see those quotas linked to their overall prosperity
in a brand versus brand struggle. But if that is all so--and I
fully credit that you know better than I--then this segment of
industry is remarkable in its anomaly.

It is interesting and unsettling to see what has happened over the
last few years. Beginning for me with M&M 2002 and the latest M&M
2006, a lot has changed with Oly, Zeiss and probably Leica and Nikon.
I did not visit Leica or Nikon. This may seem odd but I do not like
Leica or Nikon or Zeiss LM but I have Zeiss SEM. I cannot imagine
life without the Zeiss SEM. I sold my Zeiss LM and do not miss it. I
keep the Oly LMs.
Of odd note was my presentation at Scanning 2005 in Montery, CA. Not
a lot of interest in EBSD. However, this is changing. EBSD is a very
different application of SEM. It is quite a challenge for specimen
preparation....and even specific specimen types. This analytical
method is slow in coming to mainstream, IMO.
Visiting at M&M is an important and significant event. I got response
for problems with my Zeiss SEM and resolution with my Oly DP-70 CCD
camera. Otherwise, I think that I would be sucking wind on both
accounts. If one is really serious about the microscopy venue, M&M is
key to resolving issues and for finding new solutions. One day there
will pay huge dividends.
Amatuers are not going to go to this venue. That is OK. So the
usenet can provide useful feedback from those who attend to those who
do not attend. I am very happy to provide whatever feedback I can to
those who want it. I will attend as long as I can.
