Hi Gary, have checked up on Stoermer's work. You must be right, no
thickened ribs. It does show the 'keg-shaped' pores, as Stoermer calls
them. It seems that limits the amount of silica in between the pores
pretty much. So did Klaus give you some material that he knows is
easier to image for pores?

The surface on the inside is rough and consists of tiny mounds of
SiO2. In comparison, the outside is much smoother.

Is this similar in structure to the sieve-plates that should cover the
bottom of the pores?? Just wondering.

René.

Keg shape would imply symmetry which the pores do not have. That is,
the inside and outside are quite different.

The whole analysis thing actually started with an assertion by Klaus
that he could make a strew of specified orientation, i.e., all inside
up or all outside up. He won. The Mallorca diatoms were to study
geographic variability. Since he cleaned all of these diatoms, the
plates are gone. I've never seen a diatom with them. As seen, only
one or two diatoms in a strew are plugged quite severely. Most are
quite open or almost 100% open. Thus, the more open ones would be
easier to image. Using LM for a strew, one should move to another
diatom if imaging got difficult. That one might be plugged.
