coating inside which I assume is the air getting at the tungsten.

Yeah, the GE ones are made in the Czech Rep. I think and seem to work as
well as ever. Try Bulb Direct (www.bulbdirect.com) or Atlanta Light Bulb
(www.atlantalightbulb.com). Both offer one day turn around if you need it.
