Good points from the other posters. Now, DIC is one thing, DIC after
Nomarski is another. Leitz didn't license Nomarski. While there
system is
excellent you always have to have the DIC system in place. Actually
I've
never seen Zeiss stuff delaminate except for eyepieces. I've seen
tons and
tons of Nikon and Olympus DIC units.

Now if it were my bucks I'd buy a used desktop, say an Olympus BX-50,
with
Nomarski (DIC) on it from some one like Spectra Scientific
(www.spectraservices.com). I wouldn't buy one from a vendor on E-Bay,
the
vendor should know what their doing.

Buy something with enough light, you are going to have crossed
polarizers
and a wave plate so your going to loose a lot of light, about 65%. In
the
past customers were smart enough to know this so we sold only 12V-100W
units
for this purpose.

Hi

Prismas in Zeiss Condensers ar often Delaminated , so thats a thing to
look out for

Brand its a matter of tase i think , have a Zetopan DIC before and it
was very easy to use

Now use a Ortholux II , DIC system - Produce very nice DIC , but
little tricky to adjust first time , but once done , no problems you
set it up in 30 minutes if you need

Spectra have lot of stuff , but for a non profesional the prices are
to high , much less expensive to buy stuff on ebay , but you need to
know what your buying and ask Questions

But if you have plenty of money - buy a new one

Illumination i think should be upgraded to LED , that save the prismas
and lenses , from heat produced from a 100W lamp

Par, thanks for the info. I've never seen a delaminated Zeiss condenser.
No joke, I trained with Zeiss and I've been fixing and working with
microscopes since '77. I've paid particular attention to Zeiss since their
very expensive and I keep hearing of these problems, I just haven't seen it,
ever.

I'd love to see an LED upgrade kit for different microscopes but there not
out there in the field yet, I can't wait for one.

Thanks,
