I have plunked about with my inferred version of knife edge
illumination after reading a brief bit about it, somewhere, about 20
years ago. Can anybody offer some insightful tips on variations of
this technique? I have used a card covering about 1/2 of the field
iris of a Zeiss Standard 16, with reasonable results. I suspect with
more insight, a better result can be had. Any ideas would be
appreciated.
My Standard 16 was put together by Zeiss from parts in their shop, at
a discount, many years ago. It is a monocular scope, with a 1.35 na
condenser. The condenser does not have any means available for
insertion of under-condenser filters. I have gotten the correct
screws for several threaded holes on the bottom of the unit. Is it
inadviseable to insert filters underneath?
Interestingly, I have kept this scope in ambient environment
conditions for over 20 years in the tropics, very seldom in an air
conditioned room. Unlike especially an Olympus SZH/10
stereomicroscope purchased over the Internet, the Zeiss has not yet
suffered severe crazing due to fungi (knock on wood). The SZH/10 is a
mess, especially the internal optical train.
Thank you for any suggestions about knife edge illumination.
Alan
Hi Alan,
What you are doing seems similar to Baryy Piekos' Diffracted Light
Contrat.

Piekos' first paper was:

This does not seem to be freely available for download but I have
emailed you a copy.

Yep, I saw this work too, and have made several attempts with
different edges to try it out.
Not impressed with results at all, but maybe I did'nt get it right.
Cheap enough to try though - I used a modified Stanley knife blade for
my efforts. Hope you have more luck!
