As a microscope sales professional, I would strongly concur with
Kevin's advice. Not only is the "don't spend a ton of cash" aspect
sound, but the QX-5 microscope amazingly is really good.

I try to shy away from encouraging a heavier investment in a
microscope until a student who is expressing interest is in their
teens at least.
