Good morning!
I need an answer to one question.
In the Anatomy and Physiology Lab of the college where I teach the
subject we use SWIFT light microscopes (the newer model).

At the moment there is a hot discussion taking place between faculty
members regarding the way of proper overnight storage of the
microscopes between lab sessions.

The discussion is regarding the controversial dilemma: DO STUDENTS
HAVE TO BRING THE STAGE UP OR DOWN WHEN THEY ARE FINISHED USING THE
MICROSCOPE?

I realize that the subject sounds silly, but it seems like at this
moment it has become a matter of principle. Different laboratory
manuals provide different information: some say "stage up", some say
"stage down".

Please help.

Thanks in advance!

Taking a cue from how I proceed I would say that lowering the stage is the
natural thing to do when one finishes work with the microscope.

I always turn off the light, lower the stage which makes removal of the
slide
easier and safe. If I have used oil I clean up. I wait until the lamp
housing is
cool and then cover the scope. The lowered stage makes starting up easier,
because a low stage enables one to insert a slide safely and easily.

GR.
