I am looking for suggestions for a reasonably priced field microscope
and stereoscope.
In regards to the microscope, I would like phase capability if
possible.
Any suggestions as to what to buy, make or modify?
Thanks

May we know what sort of thing you'll be looking at?
I have a Swift FM-31, and it performs rather well (I can hear Kevin
grinding his teeth already!) but they are quite expensive, even
secondhand.
You won't get phase cheap on anything (you can get a v.expensive phase
set for the Swift as an extra though)
Phase condensers and objectives do not like rain and damp... easy to
ruin them.
It is always a trade-off between portability and functionality. I'd
look out for a secondhand Wild M-11, with its tin can case. Or a
simple Russian stand - portable and rugged with adequate quality for
field use.
Don't forget that in the field, even at a campsite, extremes of
temperature, dew etc will all take their toll.
Personally, and with an interest in pond water, I use a simple
microscope for 'scouting' water samples in the field, and if they look
interesting I take a sample back to a proper microscope to examine
under better conditions. For this I use a 'pocketscope' (see website)
which I can hang round my neck, and have a quick look at any water
that looks interesting.
You can get a pretty good idea what's in it.
I have the following field microscopes with indications of optical
quality/usefulness
- Swift FM-31 ++++/+++
-Pocketscope +++/+++++ very simple, very very cheap, surprising
quality, and ideal for a quick look.
-McArthur (Plastic Open University model) ++/++
- OMAG ++++/+++
-Russian Biolam (not v. portable, not really a field microscope -
useful in camp, optically OK, tough as old boots) ++++/+++
- Stereo Meiji - excellent quality stereo at reasonable price +++++/+++
+
AVOID the meopta in a domed case with a screw-on tube. I was
disappointed when I tried one.
Of course, what I'd really like is a Nikon Model H :(
Hope this helps a bit, hj
OMAG ?
