Hello there,
I am about to restore an old Zeiss Winkel.
I used octane to clean the lenses and to remove tons of old grease
from the brass drives and iris-shutters, which had become unusable.
Now I have two questions: I am aware, that the metal parts should be
lubricated and conserved aganst humidity /corrosion. What do you
recommend?
What about Ballistol?
I am very cautious here, because of the glued lenses...

The condensor swing-in lens appears somewhat yellowish. Is this normal
or due to the age of the device? The top of this condensor lens is
even. Is this condensor lens designed for immersion? The NA of the
lens is 0.9, it is part of a 277564 condensor with darkfield.

Thanks for any help in advance!
Heini

Your going to need more than one lubricant. You'll need a rather
light one for some parts like the main slide ways and something a good
bit heavier for things like the fine focus knobs. One place to look
is Dow-Corning, they make some fine lubricants like 111 and 45(?).
There's also Amsoil, they make a very good light one and Nye
lubricants, try their dealer TAI (Ny...@xxxxxxx). One thing you'll
notice about the list is they are all synthetic. Synthetic greases
last the longest by far. Of course no oil, you just don't need it,
everything in a microscope uses grease.

A NA 0.90 wasn't designed for immersion. The lens may need cleaning
although there was a lot of variation in older microscopes, every
thing varied.

Thanks,

Picking up one of Kevin's mentioned makers, Nye do a neat 'Hobbyist
Nye Lubricant Kit' which is available from companies like www.micro-tools.com.
It has a low and high viscous oil and a damping grease, so covers many
requirements.
