T:
You're not the reincarnation of the famous Marshal are you?
Edward,
I'd be glad to answer your question if I knew the famous Marshal
you're referring to.
T:
I was kidding and referring to the late Marshall Tito (aka Josip Broz) of
Yugoslavia.
That aside, if you have the money to spend to start building a
comprehensive set of tools, you may want to look at the material offered
at www.brownells.com.
Though I heartily commend their services, as you are likely not
stateside,
buying from them may not be convenient even in the day of the debased
dollar.
Indeed. The shipping charges from US to Europe are unusually high in the
last times (my last charge was $75 for $175 of merchandise), and it seems
to me that this policy will discourage buyers outside the US. Furthermore,
I simulated an order on the site you suggested and I got a 'We cannot ship
SME parts (barrels, frames, receivers, cylinders, slides and bolts) due to
General Logistics System (GLS) regulations. These items will be removed
from your order.'. This happened to me when I tried to buy some hardware
from Amazon.com too.Are we going towards autarchy?
Where any of the things you ordered gun parts, because that is what those
are. I've
never heard of GLS regulations but do know that to buy gun receivers you
need
a Federal Firearms License here. The other parts are not legally proscribed
as to purchaser
by any law as they are peripheral weapons parts, whereas the receiver is
pretty much central.
Whatever the GLS mention is, it is puzzling.
But review of their offerings may give you a thought of what to
look for more proximately. Screwdrivers can be very precise and trying to
use the almost right one can lead to very unfortunate results when you
have a tight fastener. If you can find an outlet that provides tools for
business machine service or camera repair technicians, they will give you
an interesting idea of what is available.
I love to work with precise tools and I do not easily surrender. Many
thanks for the site you suggested, I'll try for alternates.
Given the quality of your English, the cheapness of international phone
calls and the amiability
of the Brownells' people, my guess would be an email or call would be
rewarding if you wanted
to pursue contact further. They would probably be amused by your need of the
tools for microscope
work. Unfortunately, the US postal service has eliminated international
surface mail and now only
offers air service which is very expensive. The postal clerk I spoke with
said the elimination was because
"Nobody wanted it", which I find a patent falsehood given that it was about
a third of the air rate, though
considerably slower. Whether competing commercial carriers offer a surface
rate would be worth
knowing.
In any event, you are welcome. The only other thing I can suggest is to look
for hand tools that have a
lifetime replacement policy. Once you determine what brands have a local
dealer network, you can
buy used versions on Ebay at a great discount off new retail and be assured
they can always be
exchanged unless there is obvious evidence of abuse. But as you won't be
putting a 3' pipe on a
hex key working on microscopes, that shouldn't be a problem.
Regards,
Edward Hennessey
