Any info on a B&L 240?

I recently acquired a B&L 240 stereo microscope, and I am now trying
to find out more about the thing. Ideally I would have done this in
the other order...
What I have is a pile of parts in a nice box:
focusing rack with wide-set arms with knobs on each end, very heavy
240 stereo pod, .7x-3x, one eyepiece has image rotation ability
sliding attachment rack on bottom of pod for either "mono" lens or
"stereo" arms
pair of arms allowing adjustable spacing
3 pairs of lenses for the ends of the arms
several pairs of magnetized U-shaped metal pieces that go into the
lens pairs, purpose unknown
pair of 10x WF stereo eyepieces
pair of 10x WF eyepieces
2x "mono" lens
Apparently I am missing:
1x mono lens
..5x mono lens
desk stand for focusing rack
instructions...
What can anyone tell me about this gadget?
What does it mean to have a "mono" lens on a stereo microscope?
What are the arms intended for? Maybe they are for stereo pairs of
aerial photographs?
What are the U-shaped metal things for? Why the magnets on the ends?
Is there anyplace to download a manual?
When would this thing have been built?
What is the difference between the "stereo" and "non-stereo"
eyepieces?
One of the sets of arm lenses has extra windows on top; are these for
some sort of illumination?
