Re: Nikon & Zeiss black finish

What was the process that Nikon and Zeiss used to apply the black finish
to their old S series and GL series microscope frames respectively? Was
the coating black enamel and what kind of undercoating (if any) was used?
Thank you

DL:

I'm with Kevin on removing the old paint. Paint removal can be accomplished
several ways. Mechanically, as Kevin has remarked, with a heat gun (if there
are no adjacent
optics, springs or greases) and chemically by the use of paint strippers.
These methods can
be used in combination as well. The chemical strippers are a bit tedious
and, like heat, should
be kept away from sensitive parts and certain plastics. However, these
compounds won't
mar the metal.

As for finishing, follow specifications on primer and paint application.
If you have good spray-can technique, that's one way to proceed. Or
you can get a good epoxy paint with self-leveling ingredients and use a fine
brush being careful
not to heavily lard it on too heavily in any one coat. Lightly sand between
dried coats for brushed paint and
think about rigging some heat source to help dry the paint. Unheated paint
will set up, it just
doesn't set up as nicely as paint that has been carefully "cooked".

Lastly, if Zeiss isn't helping you, maybe you envy the paint job of another
microscope company
which you can call for tips... perhaps being reticent about your brand
application.
