I contacted both Zeiss and Nikon and both do not have any information on
the paint for these microscopes. Zeiss support in NY called me and said
that folks who were probably familiar with the process have all retired and
support for the GL was discontinued in 2000. All parts inventory for these
old scopes were sold. I leaning towards a polyurethane paint. Thank you.

What was the process that Nikon and Zeiss used to apply the black finish
to their old S series and GL series microscope frames respectively? Was
the coating black enamel and what kind of undercoating (if any) was
used? Thank you

An interesting paint you might want to look at is the Hammerite series which
shows a textured, self-priming
black on this page:
http://www.paint-colors.net/store/catalog/HAMMERITE-p-3-c-30.html
They are often found on larger items in machine shops and are very durable,
if not cheap. I'd call the manufacturer to check whether (like most paints)
they would benefit from a little photolamp heat curing, if you care to go
thatfar. Otherwise, you can wait for a nice hot day.
