Hi Chris,
the presence or absence of cover slips is of major concern for your
image quality.
This may not be so obvious at lower magnifications (like the ones you
have), but you should consider that the objectives were designed for
this!
As Kevin wrote, the image becomes fuzzy when you use the wrong sample
mount. This even includes the right thickness of the coverslip!
I mean, this is the same as using dry or wet lenses with the wrong
immersion-medium!
You will probably not see this at a first glance, because theres an
image, but it is not good! (and your brain can correct for a lot of
fuzz)
I think that all objectives can be used for reflected light, but you
may encounter problems with the color.
Btw, it was normal to unscrew lenses for the use with reflected light
(know this from the old Leitz used for reflected light intravital
microscopy)
The numberings on the adjustable turrets are for the correction of
your eyes, not for the correction of your objectives. Newer ones show
dioptrien. As Kevin wrote, adjust them to the middle, focus with one
eye, then use the other eye and adjust on the turret until this eye
sees sharp, too. If you wear glasses, you can adjust your turrets to
the focus length of your glasses.
Hope this helps,
heini
