It has always been thus, although not to today's degree of diligence.
Part of it is that customers like you will likely never amount to much in
sales.
And they don't want to be in a game classifying what is exotic and
dangerous versus what is common and inert.
Dear Dr. Kinch,
It is certainly true that corporations love easy profits. Classifying
chemicals as to their hazards is however done routinely by a
square showing the different levels of hazard in four categories.
It may be a start to demonstrate the freedom of our society by
permitting the sale at least of innocuous substances, such as
table salt, buffer solutions etc..
It is true that one can combine non-dangerous substances into
dangerous ones. But one can buy guns and ammunition, one
can buy battery acid and muratic acid, one can buy gasoline and
propane gas. All of these are well known to be potentially
very dangerous.
I can feel a distinct desire to control science of any kind by
clearing the scientist doing the work, approval of their papers
by the sponsoring agency, by clearance of facilities where the
work is done etc. (its called a facility clearance.) And there
are laws being made, what may and what may not be subject
of research.
The control of the tools of science, such as chemicals, is just one
aspect of this greater scheme.
G.R.
