Hello
I have made an astounding discovery regarding
the freedoms we enjoy in the West.
[snip]
This has been the case well before 9/11; the initial impetus may have
been attempts to curtail manufacture of illicit drugs, and another
reason may be liability concerns in our increasingly litigious society
(viz. - lawsuit frenzy). Also, as others have pointed out, a lot of
these companies aren't set up to deal with tiny orders from the likes of
you (and me) - it really isn't economical for them. As one other person
pointed out, Sigma is a real pain to deal with, but if you saw some of
the other substances they sell, you might understand their position. Try
the small online companies; I've had good luck with Cynmar
(www.cynmar.com), but I don't know if they sell reagent grade NaCl.
There is no need to see a conspiracy in all of this. Maybe you, like the
current Washington administration, is excessively paranoid. There are
workarounds. Now if only I could figure out how to get a small amount of
Chloral Hydrate to make a stain for mycological identification. Sigh.

Please read my original post and my reply to Kevin Cunningham. You will
find that I have already amply addressed your arguments. I have also quoted
the name of another company not associated with Sigma-Aldrich and have
in a friendly way, been told that the limitation applies to all distributors
except to the minor ones. These usually sell (overpriced) merchandise to
schools and kiddies and in my opinion one can't be sure of what one is
getting.
As far as the distribution of chloral hydrate is concerned you are on the
wrong
track. This is a compound requiring a Rx. Other psychoactive compounds,
such as some barbiturates, opiates and others are controlled by the FDA and
require submission of a special form, which may be signed by a licensed MD.
Details of their schedules can be found in the PDR (Physician's Desk
Reference).
I have not, as you will notice, spoken of these substances.
As far as other distributors are concerned, Sigma-Aldrich carries not only
their own products, but also those of many other important companies.
