Please read my original post and my reply to Kevin Cunningham. You will
find that I have already amply addressed your arguments. I have also quoted
the name of another company not associated with Sigma-Aldrich and have
in a friendly way, been told that the limitation applies to all distributors
except to the minor ones. These usually sell (overpriced) merchandise to
schools and kiddies and in my opinion one can't be sure of what one is
getting.

As far as the distribution of chloral hydrate is concerned you are on the
wrong
track. This is a compound requiring a Rx. Other psychoactive compounds,
such as some barbiturates, opiates and others are controlled by the FDA and
require submission of a special form, which may be signed by a licensed MD.

Details of their schedules can be found in the PDR (Physician's Desk
Reference).
I have not, as you will notice, spoken of these substances.

As far as other distributors are concerned, Sigma-Aldrich carries not only
their own products, but also those of many other important companies.
Please visit their site at http://www.sigmaaldrich.com/Local/SA_Splash.html

I did read your post - fully. (I didn't see NaCl listed in Appendix A, BTW)

My comments about Sigma were addressed WRT the stuff they sell out of their own
catalog (well, as of a couple of years ago), such as minute amounts of LSD, THC,
etc, to be used (presumably) in calibrating detection equipment.

Regarding the other companies, what I and others have said is more likely the
true story. Fisher Scientific, for example, sells huge amounts of chemicals, as
well as supplies, to industry and academia (at hugely inflated prices, BTW).
While I find it irritating that they won't sell me any chemicals, I realize that
my few dollars isn't worth their attention when stacked up against the volumes
they normally deal with. Same for the other biggies. And it *is* a real expense
to set up an account for you, only to have just a one-time order. Think of their
business model as being a wholesaler, not a retailer. They make tons of money
doing this, and don't need your pennies. I'm not apologising for them; I think
it sucks, but that's the nature of the game.

Did you, for your part, read what I said about the illegal drug market and the
insane liability issues the suppliers have to face? Those restrictions went into
effect in the 90s. Additionally, the US has been moving to the "nanny state"
model for some time now. Everything's gotta be safe for the kiddies. We are the
worse off for it. This has been going on for more than the past 6 years.

I am well aware of the restrictions on Chloral Hydrate. I'm just wishing there
was a workaround for it. I know there isn't, but I wish there was (etc).

Having read your other post about Cynmar, well that's too bad, 'cause now I have
to find another supplier as well. It's been a while since I ordered chemicals
from them, but their other supplies are still sold to individuals (as of last
fall), and at a fraction of the cost of the aforementioned Fisher. I miss the
days when you could go into a hobby store and buy small bottles of stuff from
Perfect.

I didn't intend to get you upset with my comments - my tone was intended to be
lighthearted, but paranoia does strange things to folks... You need to chill
out, get friendly with a college student majoring in chemistry, and get that
person to supply you with some ultra pure salt. I'll bet the Feds won't even
care.

Happy crystal hunting.
