What are some models to look at? What kind of magnification would I
need to see a full-field view of a U.S. silver dollar?

Good points all!

Stereo's are the most purchased microscopes, industry buys tons and
tons. Looking for a used, high quality instrument is soooo much
better than a new, crappy unit built in China or India. Among others
try the Capovani Brothers (www.capovani.com/dp/cat/107/63160/ilist.cfm?
LCl=342&menuid=m_2_2_1), they buy buy whole used plants, then resell
them. They range in price from $400 to $7,900. You probably would be
happy with a simple, low mag stereo. By the way, I use a US quarter
to check stereos, works just fine and its cheap!

For other places to look just type in "used stereo microsopes" into
google.

May I drift the thread a bit? I've broken the rules, bought Chinese
goods, mono and stereo. What difference would I see with one of the
better used units? I can understand the availability of replacement
parts, but just for hobbyist occasional use I wonder what the
difference is.

thanks
