What are some models to look at? What kind of magnification would I
need to see a full-field view of a U.S. silver dollar?
Good points all!
Stereo's are the most purchased microscopes, industry buys tons and
tons. Looking for a used, high quality instrument is soooo much
better than a new, crappy unit built in China or India. Among others
try the Capovani Brothers (www.capovani.com/dp/cat/107/63160/ilist.cfm?
LCl=342&menuid=m_2_2_1), they buy buy whole used plants, then resell
them. They range in price from $400 to $7,900. You probably would be
happy with a simple, low mag stereo. By the way, I use a US quarter
to check stereos, works just fine and its cheap!
For other places to look just type in "used stereo microsopes" into
google.

May I drift the thread a bit? I've broken the rules, bought Chinese
goods, mono and stereo. What difference would I see with one of the
better used units? I can understand the availability of replacement
parts, but just for hobbyist occasional use I wonder what the
difference is.
thanks
Chinese "goods", crap is more descriptive is just that, crap. It just
doesn't work. I spent a few hours last week declaring a compound
piece of junk dead, it was named a Micromaster but crap was again more
descriptive. The customer spent real live money for this and it
actually cost a lot more than a name brand since it broke about 18
months after it was bought and there was no way in heck it could be
fixed. A name brand lasts at least 20 years, a big difference. I've
never seen one of these (here we go again!) pieces of crap last well
or work well.
Look, it doesn't work, doesn't last so actually, its more expensive
than the well known brands. Which brings me to another rant. I don't
know why an amateur would buy a new instrument, you can get a much
better deal used.
Thanks for putting up with me.
