Re: Zeiss Photomicroscope III correction?

Thanks for the input, Kevin.

My real problem is that I have to analyze this optical problem without a
specimen instrument in hand. That's why I have to ask advice here, as
the customer with the microscope is not conversant in the optical
principles.

Now the real question, what do you want to put were?

We propose to put a flat digital image sensor (such as a Canon digital
SLR) above the top port via a custom-made tube. This would in principle
be no different than the phototube and basic body Zeiss made for 35mm
film cameras, but possibly relaying differently to project a smaller
image for the smaller sensor. The question is how the light emerges
from the top port of the Photomicroscope III (that is, to a focal plane
versus infinity), and whether this needs further correction such as
specifically by a Kpl eyepiece.

Or maybe the need for correction depends on the objectives installed?
Looking at the Zeiss manual g-41-170photomicroscope3transmittedlight.pdf
from their Web site, some of the objectives in the list say they are
"corr (flatfield objective)".

Looking at the light path diagram in that manual, I see what you mean
about the 160mm objectives being followed by a tube lens which
collimates the light (makes it infinity). The diagram shows the crazy
path to the eyepieces, but not to the upper port. It is the case that
the upper port light is collimated?

Part of the confusion is that "correction" means several different
things here, such as flatfield correction versus objective/eyepiece
pairwise correction.
