That would be a solution, and I did try it, but on the Labolux the
field lens is within the base before the 45deg. mirror. The Ortholux
has a diaghram built into the base but there's ho such provision in
the Labolux.

If the lamp field lens is flat on the stand base you could add either
an iris diaphragm (eg from junk saes, camera shop junk box etc) or
make card stops measured to size. This topical tip by Ian Walker on
