Using biological objective lenses with uncovered specimens

Hi folks,
People in this group gave me some advice early this year about using biological objective lenses with uncovered specimens. The consensus seemed to be that it would not give good results, particularly with high magnification objectives.
I am writing because I had the opportunity to try it out. I bought a Watson "Standard Metallurgical" microscope which came with a x40 objective lens marked "For Uncovered Objects". I looked at metal surfaces using this lens, and also using a Watson x48 biological objective lens.
The difference I observed was obvious and pronounced. The images produced by the biological objective look blurred. The objective for uncovered objects shows a lot of fine detail which is lost due to the blurriness of the image formed by the biological objective.
Thanks for the advice. Perhaps this will help someone else in the future.
Best wishes,
Chris Tidy
