So where does one go to get the perfect magnification thingy?

Try looking at the Edmund Optical (www.edmund.com) web site. Sounds
like the magnifiers they sell will float your boat. Zeiss makes a lot
of really nice magnifiers too but they cost some were around a small
central American country.
