I know that most 160mm objectives can be used on the (170mm) Orthoplan
without 'much' impact on the image quality, but if I want to get the best
results, would it be possible to cut off 1 cm of the binocular tubes? Would
that give me the desired 160mm? I could keep the remains of the tubes for
the use of 170mm objectives.

Theo,
Theo, Theo, Theo! Geez, don't! If you want to cut things up, well,
that's why there are Swift microscopes.
First of all 170mm Leitz microscopes were actually 162mm. Cut of 10
mm and you would be 8 mm under were you needed to be. Since the
difference is so small you can have both types on the same nosepiece.
There will be some re-focusing but only a small amount.
Cutting up microscopes gives me the willies any way....
