For varying definitions of cheap. The beam splitters/vertical illuminators all seem to be microscope specific and those microscopes are almost certainly infinity microscopes.

That's the idea, the mechanics of doing so with a modicum of precision are the issue ... a cheap epi-illumination microscope or a DIY microscope from tube pieces from Newport / Edmunds / Thorlabs / LINOS / etc seem the best option. Well, that or lego :)
