Bausch & Lomb Stereoscope model ASZ25L3 needs adjustment

This 'scope is a 10-25X zoom stereoscope. It uses fixed non-removable
eyepeices. It offers both transmitted and epitaxial illumination
within its built-in base. Two vertical posts support the zoom
cartridge and move it up and down by rack & pinion to achieve focus.
The unit is very clean - if not new - but needs to be collimated. To
do so requires that the eyepieces + eyetubes be removed to allow the
protective cover of the zoom cartridge to be removed. The prism
adjustment screws are directly under this cover and cannot be reached
in any other way. I have tried to remove the eyetubes with no success.
They attach to the mechanism that provides for inter-pupillary
adjustment, which is a zinc casting that doesn't look particularly
beefy. I've exerted about as much force as I dare to apply to the
eyetubes, but they don't budge. I've tried to loosen them with WD40...
to no avail. Does anyone know how to free these eyetubes from the zinc
casting? Any help or advice would be appreciated... as would a service
manual.
(This mechanical configuration was also available in a higher power
version, model ASZ45E. The manuals for these two models are probably
interchangeable.)
