You can see a few hundred on Ebay.  They look fine, but are the mechnics
and optics crap?

They tend to be. It's all about 2 things, materials and
craftsmanship. The materials, from overloy porous castings to ill-
fitted gears all add up, and you get unacceptable X-Y motion while
focusing, drift, lots of problems. Sub-standard optical cements, and
lenses give poor images.

Having said that, in the current microscopy business, 2 companies have
indeed broken out of the mold, neither is Indian, but one Chinese, one
Japanese, and they've really come a LONG way. Those two companies
being Meiji and Motic. In both cases, their core instruments not
only are a far cry from the cheap stuff we're talking about here, but
are now at the level of being truly competitive with the "big 4", and
in many cases coming out on top of them. Meiji and Motic can both be
taken very seriously.
