OK, I understand your point.  But eyepieces do not produce a real image,
flat or otherwise, so the "plan" sense of the eyepiece is that it flattens
an (incoming) curved image.

This is "correct" in the sense that they do not independently produce
an image, at least in the direction that the image is coming through
them, rather the plan objectives correct and project an unfinished
image produced by the objective.
